The absence of a period is usually the clearest sign that you are pregnant, but our body alerts us before in other ways. If you’re looking to get pregnant, take note of these symptoms.
Early symptoms of pregnancy and how to tell if I'm pregnant
  • When do the first symptoms of pregnancy appear?
  • Early symptoms of pregnancy
  • How do I know if I’m pregnant?
  • How does the pregnancy test work?

That the rule does not come when it touches is usually the first symptom of pregnancy and what leads many women to confirm it through a home pregnancy test. However, our body begins to change even before the first fault occurs.

Although each woman experiences pregnancy in a particular way and experiences symptoms in different ways and at different times, there are some signs that can indicate that you are probably expecting a baby.

WHEN DO THE FIRST SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY APPEAR?

If you’re of childbearing age and it’s been a week or more without your period, you may be pregnant. However, having a missed is not a definitive sign since many women have irregular periods and missing menstrual periods can also indicate that there is a disease or other causes.

Although many women do not notice any symptoms until late in pregnancy, others may notice changes in their body even before they lack their first period, from the moment the embryo implants in the uterus, that is, between one and two weeks after sexual intercourse.

EARLY SYMPTOMS OF PREGNANCY

In the first weeks of pregnancy, from the time the embryo implants in the uterus until about week 13, the hormonal changes that occur cause the expectant mother to notice many symptoms (although not noticing any is also perfectly normal).

The first symptoms of pregnancy are:

  • Slight spotting (called implantation bleeding), sometimes accompanied by mild abdominal cramping or cramping, may occur when the fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, 10 to 14 days after conception. It doesn’t always happen and, when it does, it’s often mistaken for menstruation.
  • Nausea (with or without vomiting) is one of the most well-known symptoms of the first months of pregnancy, but some women experience it as early as the first few days (and others never have). Although they are often called “morning sickness,” they can occur at any time of the day.
  • You may notice more desire to go to the bathroom, since when you are pregnant the amount of blood in the body increases, which causes your kidneys to process more fluid that ends up becoming urine.
  • You may also notice more swollen and sensitive breasts.
  • Fatigue is another of the first symptoms that pregnant women notice and is because the body is working to create the embryo.
  • Constipation can also be a sign of pregnancy. It’s because hormonal changes cause the digestive system to slow down.
  • Feeling aversion to certain foods is, for many, a clear sign that they are pregnant and is because the sense of taste and smell are more acute, something that is also attributed to hormonal changes.
  • Mood swings or feeling a little sadder or with emotions running high.
  • Swelling, similar to that which occurs at the beginning of menstruation.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M PREGNANT?

If you’ve noticed some of the symptoms we’ve mentioned or if you’ve already had a fault, there are two ways to confirm that you’re pregnant:

  • A home pregnancy test. A positive result in this type of test has a very high reliability, most have an accuracy of between 97% and 99% once there has been a fault. If the result is negative, but you still have symptoms, repeat it in a week. Some can be done even before you miss your period.
  • A blood test is an even more accurate way to indicate if there is a pregnancy, with a reliability of almost 100%.

HOW DOES THE PREGNANCY TEST WORK?

Pregnancy tests detect levels of human chorionic gonadotropin hormone (hCG) in the urine.

  • HCG is often called the “pregnancy hormone” and is a hormone produced by embryonic cells from the first week of development, around day 6 after fertilization.
  • Pregnancy tests can be purchased in pharmacies and usually consist of a device that you must wet with your urine (preferably the first in the morning) and, after waiting a few minutes, show if you are pregnant or not.
  • Before taking the test, read the instructions carefully and check the expiration date. Also, you should keep in mind that different brands may show results differently.
