Squalene, oil for soft skin, at the expense of sharks

Squalene is an endogenous substance produced by skin cells. According to several studies, it keeps skin young, is antioxidant and even has anti-cancer properties. Newborns have a lot of squalene, but production decreases with age, and so the skin becomes drier and less firm.

In addition to human skin, plant substances also contain squalene, and this substance can also be found in olives, rice bran, wheat germ, yeast and sugar cane. The problem, however, is that squalene quickly becomes rancid and cannot be stored for long.

To avoid this rancidity, the squalene is hydrogenated, so that the unsaturated oil becomes saturated. This hydrogenated squalene is renamed squalene and usually appears in the list of ingredients of your cosmetics under the name “squalene”.

WHAT ARE THE PROPERTIES OF SQUALENE?

Squalene has the following proven positive properties:

  • Moisturizes.
  • It makes the skin elastic and supple and thus helps against small wrinkles.
  • It is antioxidant.
  • It is antibacterial.
  • Does not clog pores.
  • It can reduce the redness and swelling of acne.

SQUALANE, THE GREAT DEATH FOR SHARKS

The name “squalene” takes its origin: Squali Dae (squalus) means shark in Latin. Squalene is obtained from shark liver and sharks die from it.

According to the animal rights organization Shark Allies, 7 out of 8 skin creams containing squalene from shark liver, which means that around 2.7 million sharks die for cosmetic reasons each year.

According to the animal welfare organization Shark Project, their livers are often removed while they are still alive and sharks are thrown back into the sea.

Shark Allies claims that, for many companies, shark liver is the cheapest source of the most squalene. The companies claim that obtaining it from plants is 30% more expensive, although this is only true in the case of olives, because taking it out of sugar cane would reduce the price by a third.

On the other hand, removing squalene from the shark’s liver is a simple and quick process.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE PLANT-BASED SQUALENE AND AVOID ANIMAL-BASED SQUALENE

If the manufacturer uses vegetable squalene of verifiable origin, he will have no problem informing of the specific origin with declarations such as olive oil squalene, wheat germ or rice bran.

If you only state that it is of vegetable origin, without specifying the raw material, it is possible that it is not a traceable product and could contain squalene of animal origin.
