At present, the use of synephrine, an active agent that is present in critical fruits, especially in the peel of bitter orange or Citrus aurantium, has become interested in its thermogenic properties.

The molecular structure of synephrine is similar to that of ephedrine, a drug that is effective for weight loss and to improve athletic performance but has many adverse effects.

Synephrine’s natural origin, its effectiveness as a fat burner and the absence of side effects when using it as a nutritional supplement has fostered interest in its use for weight management as a safe substitute for ephedrine.

SYNEPHRINE: WHAT IS IT

Synephrine, also called p-synephrine, is an active agent found mainly in the peel of bitter orange or Citrus aurantium. In traditional Chinese medicine this fruit is known as zhi shi and was recommended to improve digestive, nervous and anti-obesity problems, among other therapeutic purposes.

Synephrine is a very effective active agent in sports-based programs to combat obesity and overweight. During moderate exercise, synephrine increases the metabolic rate and oxidation of fats, while reducing that of glycogen, protecting muscle. It releases fatty acids and triglycerides from adipose tissue, facilitating their lipolysis and thermogenesis, so that it generates greater resistance to fatigue.

Synephrine’s natural origin, its effectiveness as a fat burner and the absence of side effects when using it as a nutritional supplement has fostered interest in its use for weight management as a safe substitute for ephedrine.

FOODS WITH SYNEPHRINE

Most citrus fruits provide small doses of synephrine: oranges, especially the so-called Seville, tangerines, grapefruits and lemons. Enjoy the whole fruit, juice, jams and zest in breads and infusions. Where there is more is in the peel of the bitter orange.

SYNEPHRINE IN SUPPLEMENTS

The amount of synephrine that is achieved by the diet is not enough to supplement. The capsules are made mostly with synthetic sine-frine, a recognized substance with the same formula as the natural one. The presence of synephrine obtained from Citrus aurantium does not usually reach 1%.

To avoid side effects, isolated synephrine should be taken. To enhance its fat burning action, most supplements only have 6% synephrine that is accompanied by substances such as caffeine or ginseng, which do alter the cardiovascular system. Before taking any supplement, it is advisable to consult with the specialist.

SYNEPHRINE: SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTRAINDICATIONS

The average dose is 60 mg per day. To activate fat oxidation in moderate exercise, up to 2 mg per kilo of weight per day. It is advisable to take it in the morning, in periods of two months with a month of pause in between. Ingesting 1 g whole can cause a collapse of health. Although it is a safe supplement, we recommend that you consult with your doctor before taking any type of supplement.

Isolated, without other stimulants, it is safe. It does not cause alterations in blood pressure, heart rate or tremors, nor does it affect the liver or kidney, neither in healthy people nor with any cardiovascular risk factor. It should be avoided in pregnancy, lactation and childhood.
